Past

Born in Adrealia, Caoimhin believed that he was human for the first five decades of his life. Those around him had no reason to suspect otherwise. Both his supposed parents had been human. His birth mother had been trying to have a child for several years only to lose that child before it was even born. She found herself pregnant, and found that like all the other babies that came before that she was losing this one. She didn't want to lose another child. She knew that she wouldn't be able to handle it.

Her husband knew that she wouldn't be able to handle it. He knew that if his wife lost another child that it would destroy her. So, he set out to find someone that could keep their unborn child from dying. He wondered the streets for some time, but everyone he came across told him that nothing could be done. The child was going to die. He was about to give up hope when a young female approached him. She had overheard his plight, and had a way to help his wife not suffer the lose of another child. However, the child she will give birth to will not be the same child she carries within her womb at this very moment. No, the woman told him that she was afraid she couldn't save their dying unborn babe.

This confused the husband. He had no idea how his wife was going to give birth to a baby when that baby was going to die before it was even born. The woman told him that they were going to do this by implanting another child around the same age into her womb. The woman's hands immediately went to her own stomach, and the husband understood what she wanted to do. She wished to transfer her unborn child to his wife. The use of magic was more than frowned upon in Adrealia, it was a death sentence. However, he didn't care. He would willing walk to the gallows if it stopped his wife from breaking into a million little pieces.

The thing, however, he didn't understand was why she wanted to do it. If she was a witch wouldn't someone else among her people be better suited to serve as the birth mother? This made the woman laugh. She told him that she wasn't a witch, but rather a fairy. This child growing inside of her was an offspring of both the summer and winter court. Neither courts were happy about her relationship with the father, and she was afraid that they were going to take the wrath out on their child. She believed that the only way to protect her child was to put him somewhere where they would never find him, and after considering her options for some time she concluded that the human world would be the last place they would think of looking for him.

After hearing her story, the husband agreed to allow her to put her unborn child inside his wife. Though, truth be told, the story had nothing to do with his decision. He had already agreed to do it when the woman first approached him with the idea, but her story did make him believe that he was doing a noble deed that would help two females not suffer a great lose that day. He took the fairy to his house where the deed was done. He did not tell his wife the truth of what had been done. He simply allowed his wife to believe that the woman had somehow saved her unborn baby's life. The woman left after the deed was done, presumably to return to her people.

Several months later, the wife gave birth to Caoimhin. It quickly became clear that there was something different about him. He had special powers. His father understood perfectly well why this was, but his mother having no idea that her son was actually a faerie believed that he was just one of those unfortunate souls being born with special powers. Though, knowing the truth wouldn't have done anything to alleviate the fear she had over the authorities finding out Caoimhin had been gifted. The government of Adrealia had forbidden anything supernatural for entering their lands. They knew what happened to those human lands that allowed the supernatural to touch them, and that was not a fate they wanted to share. So, they decided to kill anything that resembled the supernatural in any way--including those souls born with special powers.

Exceptions were made, of course, but only to those of higher class. Caoimhin's family were not of the proper social standing to be excluded from the law that would require him to be killed. They weren't poor, either. Oh, no they were far from it. His father made enough money so his family could live a rather comfortable life. His wife used some of this money to pay officials to look the other way where her son was concerned, but she knew that this wasn't a permanent solution. She knew that one of these days that an official she couldn't bribe would notice her son's ability and he would quickly be marched to the gallows. It was her greatest fear every time they went out.

It was a fear that never came to pass. A member of the upper aristocracy by the name of Devin Kearney had noticed the injustice behind the idea of excluding the upper class from receiving the death sentence if one of their own is found to have special powers. If being born with special powers a death sentence than all those with these powers should be executed regardless of their social standing, and if one person can be excluded than they all should be excluded. This was not something that those around Devin wanted to hear, but he eventually convince them to create the order that would eventually become known as the elite. The responsibility of this order is to patrol the lands and keep anything supernatural out. Everyone who has special powers are required to join, and those who refuse are somehow forced or killed.

This didn't matter to the people of Adrealia. They were happy that their loved ones with these special powers weren't automatically killed because of them. When the order was first created no one hesitated to join it or send their children to the order. Only later in history did people start not to be so enthusiastic about joining the order, and doing whatever they can not to have themselves or their children have to join it. Though, even in the modern day most people consider being apart of the order a great honor and will join it willing. However, back in the days of Caoimhin no one saw any reason not for not joining the order. Caoimhin was no exception. He joined the order.

He was apart of the orders for many years until he learned the truth of what he was. It came from his father upon his death bed. Caoimhin's mother had died just several months before, and his father's health had rapidly declined since. He had been extremely healthy for his age had suddenly found himself suffering from all the affections that came with his age. He was looking forward to death and being able to see his wife again, but he had something he needed to tell his son before he went. Without hesitation, Caoimhin went to his father's death bed. It was here that his father told him the truth. The news floored him. He was angry at his father for lying to him all these years, but in spite that fact he still loved him.

He knew, however, that he couldn't stay in Adrealia. He packed his bags and left that very night. It didn't take him long to find his way into the forest that the faeries dwell within. He hadn't consciously sought them out, but he had to admit that he had been curious about the people he was suppose to have been born into. The fae were more than happy to tell him about them. He learned all about their society, rules, customs and how every fae align themselves with a court. It didn't take him long to realize that this wasn't true.

While most fae did swear alliance to a specific court there were some that didn't. These faeries are known as solitary fae, and Caoimhin realized he was one of them. He didn't feel like any of the courts were the right fit. None of them brought this sensation of finally coming home inside of him. There was, also, the fact he was never a team player. Teams had roles. There was always a leader and those that followed. Neither roles appealed to Caoimhin. He preferred to go it alone. His loner personality worked among the humans because they were more concerned with protecting the people than everyone working together in a unit. If someone wanted to go it alone the only thing they would do was point out there were safety in numbers.

Caoimhin had a feeling that it was different among the fae. It wasn't that he necessarily thought they were going to have major issue with the fact that he preferred to go it alone, but that they would expect him to push that desire aside for the betterment of the society and the world. Finally, there was the fact that swearing alliance among the fae differ greatly from the humans. Among the human they were just words, but among the fae they were a magic spell that bind an individual to a specific court and the will of the one who leads it.

He debated between the different courts for some time before saying fuck it, and refusing to swear alliance to any of them. In doing so, he signed his fate as a solitary fae, and learned that throughout the course of history other faeries have done the same thing. He quickly came to understand the difference between solitary fae and court faeries. The solitary fae not only weren't aligned to a specific court, but tended to be lighter or darker than their court counterparts. It didn't take him long to realize that he was a dark one.

He enjoyed the hunt. It wasn't just the thrill of the chase that he enjoyed--most faerie enjoyed it for that reason. He loved the taste of their fear. He found it to be a substance all on its own. It didn't take him long to realize that fear wasn't the only emotion he could consume. He could consume the other darker emotions. Hatred. Anger. Jealousy. Only to name a few. He didn't have to wait to find someone with these emotions. Granted, that wouldn't have been hard. There are always someone to be found feeling these darker emotions everywhere. However, there was something enjoyable about pulling these darker emotions out himself. There is a thrill to it he simply cannot describe.

Present

Caoimhin lived as a solitary fae for many centuries, but then the universe decided to put him upon a different path. It choose him to be the knight of the summer court, and by association the king of the spring court. That is how it always have been. The knight of one season is the king of the season that comes before it. He does not like the fact that he has been chosen for this role, but he knows better than to protest against the will of the universe. He will accept his role and do his best to perform it.

Though, he question why he has been chosen. He does believe that there are those fae out there that would be better suited for the role, and given the fact that he is a dark fae the idea of being chosen as the knight for the summer court seems bizarre for him. He had always thought if he was ever chosen to be a knight for a court it would have been the winter one. There is a part of him that believes that he is only a temporary knight. He believes that the summer queen finding herself unbalanced needed someone to fix that, and the universe, for whatever reason, decided that he was the best one for the job.

Once she has been put back into balance the universe will return him back to his position of solitary fae, and name someone more worthy for the position of her knight. It is not just hope that has Caoimhin believing this, he has read similar things happening throughout history. Though, deep down inside he knows that this isn't the case. His days as a solitary fae has ended. He doesn't know what kinda king he will be nor does he know how being the king of the spring court will change him.
